Distracted Driving and Yard Sales

When people think of distracted driving they usually think of cell phones, or changing music, but anything which takes the drivers eyes off the road ahead can lead to a distraction and then an accident.

One other main cause of distracted driving in hand made signs advertising yard sales, as many drivers will take their eyes off the road to read the signs. If the sign is difficult to read, the driver may spend even longer trying to read the sign which means that he or she is distracted for a longer period of time.

In addition, if the sign contains many items for sale once again, rather than stopping to read a driver may spend as long as possible trying to read all of the items, making an imminent accident a strong possibility.

For those who are having a yard sale, the best advice to avoid an accident in front of the home is to make a large poster, with very clear writing in black and just saying “Yard Sale” with an arrow pointing to where the sale is to be held. The sign should be removed as soon as the sale is over.

Lawsuit Filed by Widow of White Plains Surgeon

A lawsuit has been filed by the widow of White Plains surgeon Dr. Robert Small, who died last summer following a bicycle accident.

In the lawsuit, it is alleged that negligence by Westchester County and the town of Yorktown led to poor conditions on the North County Trailway which were responsible for Small’s fall and his death.

Small, aged 63, who lived in Briarcliff Manor and was an orthopedic surgeon at White Plains Hospital for over 30 years, was riding his bicycle in the area of Route 118 near Revere Drive shortly after 6 p.m. in July last year. He then fell from his bicycle and hit the pavement. Another cyclist who was ahead of him called 911 and Small was taken to Westchester Medical Center where he passed away.

The lawsuit claims that the local governments knew about the poor condition of the roadway but had not repaired it properly. They claim that the accident was the fault of Small.

How to Best Negotiate Intersections

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has provided data which shows that over a third of all motor vehicle crashes happen when vehicles are in an intersection, either turning or crossing and they are also particularly dangerous for cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians.

There are many reasons why intersections are so dangerous. Many drivers are distracted and do not realize there is an intersection and some are going too fast to stop safely. In addition in some vehicles the visibility is restricted with large roof pillars holding airbags.

When approaching an intersection you must be very careful and check all around you. Always stop and look everywhere at an intersection, using all windows and all mirrors.

Even if travelling straight across make sure you check the side for cyclists or motorcyclists or someone running a light.
